Hey man, lemme run something by you guys real quick. I am a Black woman living in the United States of America. In my 34 years living on this earth, I have absolutely been called racial slurs (always from a distance, thank you), been discriminated against, and have been excluded all because of the color of my skin. While I am not one for using the race card as a crutch, what I’m not cool with is someone diminishing the facts of my experience because you “just don’t get it.” The vast majority of people who say that it’s “not that bad” are non POC (people of color). Shrugging it off or attempting to put a POC’s feelings or experiences in a box because YOU don’t see the problem is disrespectful and doesn’t do much in terms of resolving the issue at hand. It’s literally putting a bandaid over a gunshot wound. And while I wouldn’t wish the (negatives of the) Black experience on anyone, I won’t allow any of you to sit in my face and tell me to get over it as though this bullshit doesn’t still exist.
Fact 1: we do not live in a post racial America
Fact 2: Black people are not required to ignore companies or other large entities who use blatant OR subliminal advertising that depicts us in a negative manner. We have the right to be angry and voice our opinions about it. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
Fact 3: you being called a honky or cracker is NOT the same as someone being called a nigger. Cut the bullshit please.
Fact 4: no, it’s not easier to simply “get over it.”
Fact 5: your “reverse racism” stories will not make me feel less threatened or irritated by treatment or stories depicted in the attached photo. When situations like these arise, you’re not soothing any discomfort by recalling the time a POC made you feel uncomfortable; you’re insulting me because you’re acting as though YOUR experience somehow trumps mine. We aren’t trading war stories here, folks. No need to try and “top” me with yours.
Fact 6: it’s great that you love everybody but unfortunately, the attached photo gives slight hints at Fact #1.
Again, my goal isn’t to make anyone uncomfortable, but please don’t try to calm my “upset” by telling me about that one time in some exotic location when you were called a cracker or honky because I’ll quickly hit you with the look in pic #2 right before I skip away.
